Girl Scouts Make The World A Better Place

Today, Girl Scouts is, as it always has been, the organization best positioned to help girls develop critical life skills they need to become the next generation of leaders—and to change the world in big and small ways.

At our core, Girl Scouts—Dakota Horizons aims to inspire girls to be leaders in their own lives by building the courage, confidence, and character to raise their voices and be advocates for the issues and ideas important to them. Leadership is why the effect of Girl Scouts remains so long after a girl leaves her troop meetings behind and moves on in the world.  Girl Scouts like Shanna Hill, Yankton, whose compassion prompted her project named "Angel Gowns." This project touched the lives of parents who recently lost an infant at birth, or had the joy of seeing their premature baby survive. These little "angels" were her inspiration to design and make gowns to fit their tiny size.  She not only sewed the garments herself but enlisted the support of others including a women’s ministry group and family members. Today this project lives on as the seed she planted continues to bloom not only Yankton but in other cities as the Angel Gown took wings inspiring others to use their sewing talents to help others.

For her efforts, Shanna was chosen for the highest honor in Girl Scouting, namely, the Gold Award.  Even though Shanna has graduated as a youth member, she continues to make an impact on the local Girl Scout community serving as a volunteer with Troop #50158 and assisting other volunteers with events including the upcoming day camp in June. This passionate Girl Scout alumnae chose to become a lifetime member of an organization that has shaped her life from early childhood to adulthood.

The Girl Scout Leadership Experience offers all interested girls from kindergarten through 12th grade the opportunity to become leaders in their community. This is accomplished through the Girl Scout activities receiving Yankton United Way funding. The Connecting Kids Youth Scholarship provides critical support to our members in Yankton and the surrounding counties.
