United Way of Greater Yankton Expands Services in Yankton Community Through Increase in Support from Mount Marty College Employees

YANKTON, SD — Feburary 15, 2018 — True to Mount Marty College’s mission of service to the community, faculty and staff have doubled their financial contributions to United Way of Greater Yankton’s 2017-18 Community Campaign, compared to the 2015-16 fundraising campaign.

United Way of Greater Yankton works alongside companies, governments, nonprofits and other organizations in addressing complex community needs. Thanks to the increase in funding during this three-year period, education services, which include mentoring, youth scholarship funds and academic success programs, increased by 84 percent, meals and shelter services expanded by 28 percent, and transportation and access to health services increased by 40 percent.

“Mount Marty College’s support of our mission is invaluable,” says Lauren Hanson, Executive Director of United Way & Volunteer Services of Greater Yankton. “The generosity of faculty, staff and students enable great things to happen within our community.”

Contributions by faculty and staff to the annual MMC United Way Community Campaign Drive have increased by 107% in the past three years. The jump in total giving from MMC faculty and staff was overseen this year by a new task force of representatives across campus to raise awareness and enthusiasm for the United Way campaign, says campaign co-chair and Associate Professor of Psychology Lori Lincoln.

“This was a great group to establish and, I believe, the foundation of where our efforts and support will continue to grow,” said Lincoln, who also serves on the United Way of Greater Yankton Board of Directors.

The task force included MMC student representatives, who often play an important role in the United Way’s efforts through their support for nonprofit agencies and organizations via student internships, service-learning experiences, and other service projects.

“Through our involvement with United Way, we have a true opportunity to 'live our mission' by supporting the needs and challenges of the Yankton community that are addressed through United Way,” Lincoln said.

“MMC leadership, in-kind support, student volunteer power, and more are helping build a stronger greater Yankton community,” says Hanson. “Thank you, Mount Marty College, for changing lives. Together, we are possibility!”

Mount Marty College is Yankton's fifth largest employer and contributes $15 million in annual revenue to the Yankton community each year. To learn more, visit
