United Way In the News

United Way & Volunteer Services of Greater Yankton’s Volunteer of the Month program recognizes the dedication and hard work of some of our community’s most active citizens.

Yankton is very fortunate to have thousands of community volunteers who give of themselves selflessly and strive to make a real difference in the lives of their neighbors.

A great example of dedication to our community is seen in the work of long time community volunteer, Dave Abbott, who was recently recognized as United Way of Greater Yankton’s Volunteer of the Month.

Dave was surprised with the honor during Upper Deck’s Annual Charity Poker Run to benefit the Yankton Sack Pack program. “Dave cares for this community and is passionate about giving back,” states Lauren Hanson, Executive Director of United Way, who nominated Abbott for the award. “Dave’s service to our community is inspiring. He is always willing to go the extra mile to ensure the success of our most critical programs. Thank you, Dave, for all you do for the Yankton community!”

We asked Dave to share more about his volunteer efforts in the greater Yankton community:

I began volunteering when I retired from ALCOA in 2004.

I continue volunteering because it’s a way of helping the greater Yankton community, a community that has been good to me and my family for the past 37 years.

I volunteer for The Center’s Meals on Wheels, Yankton Sack Pack, Patriot Guard Riders, and United Way of Greater Yankton. I spend over 500 hours per year volunteering for these agencies.

Volunteer work is enjoyable because you meet people, and it’s a way to bring people together for a great cause.

It is difficult to pick the best volunteer experience, as they are all great, but I always love seeing the smile on a person’s face, that is the best feeling.

The advice I would give to those thinking about getting out there and volunteering in their communities is there are people that need volunteers to help them in their daily life. That’s what we do.  And some day we may need a volunteer to help us.
