The Smile Mobile will be rolling into Yankton for the eighth consecutive year to once again provide FREE dental care to local children ages 0 - 21.

If you should happen to drive past Beadle Elementary School the week of March 17th you will see a large blue bus sitting in front. You might be thinking, what is happening in that huge bus? Well, there are two fully-equipped dental offices with chairs located inside. Those chairs are occupied by youth receiving dental care from a dentist and an assistant.

Almost every day, Delta Dental's Smile Mobile dental staff sees a child who is in pain because of untreated dental disease. These are children who, for a variety of reasons, have been unable to access adequate dental care.

And while too many "it's just a cavity," in reality dental disease is painful, affects a child's overall health and often leads to poor school performance. In fact, dental decay is the single most common chronic disease of early childhood.

Delta Dental supports the Smile Mobile with paid staff and volunteer dental professionals who provide care on the unit. The mobile dental bus is on the road approximately 40 weeks each year, serving an estimated 1,300 children annually in South Dakota.

Last year, the Delta Dental Smiles Mobile came to Yankton and provided preventive and restorative dental care valued at $19,548 to 41 area youth. The cost to bring this program to Yankton is $2,500 - another example of how your contribution to United Way & Volunteer Services provides services to the community.

Beadle Elementary School Principal Carey Mitzel and staff, graciously host the Smile Mobile and its personnel each year. Retired Senior Volunteer Program volunteers also assist with reception and registration of patients. Thank you all for your continued support of this program!

Please don't miss the opportunity to receive excellent comprehensive oral health care. The Delta Dental Smile Mobile will be in Yankton March 17th to the 21st. Preregistration is required to participate. Registration forms can be obtained at the Contact Center, County Health Nurse, Clothing Closet, Head Start, and United Way & Volunteer Services.
